THE FEAR OF EXAMS!

One day, while I was in my office, a parent walked up to me and asked this one simple question. “Pavan, my son is in tenth grade. The pre-board exams are near, and my child doesn’t study at all. He always wants to play games and watch videos on my phone. If I make him study, he will end up doodling on the last pages of the notebook. I am terrified that he might fail. Please tell me what to do and how do I make him study?”

This is one of the most common questions asked to me in my two decades of teaching and training. Most parents have this fear of their children failing in their tenth grade. And righteously the children as well contribute to the concern of their parents by not studying. As the exams near, the parents often end up with a dictate barring their children the gadgets. There are also parents who end up locking their children inside a room for hours believing that they would study.

ARE YOU ONE OF THOSE PARENTS WHO FEAR THAT YOUR CHILD MIGHT FAIL THE EXAM?

ARE YOU A PARENT WHOSE CHILD DOES EVERYTHING EXCEPT STUDYING?

ARE YOU IN A STATE OF PANIC THAT YOUR CHILD’S SCORES WILL GO LOW, IF THEY DON’T STUDY?

If you are a Parent who has solved this problem, share your ideas down the comment section. But

If you are a parent who is going through such a phase, then you need not have to worry. Many parents have this challenge.

The simplest solution to this is that I suggest parents in this scenario, is to let go of the fear. When your child doesn’t fear why should you? Now, I know that you as a parent would ask me, “Pavan how can I just let go of my child? It’s about their future.” I agree with your point. And I am asking you to let go of the “fear” and not the “problem”.

LET. GO. OF. YOUR. FEAR.

Now the next question is how do you as a parent get your child to study?

Here are four things that you can do to get your child studying for their exams.

1. Study with them: Some parents use their phones and ask their children to study for their exams. The problem here is, the parents themselves are using gadgets while the child is studying. If you ask your child to study from their book, you too should read a book or paper. This will help you and your child bring up fascinating discussions about what you have studied. And you will have a better idea about the performance of your child.

2. Take breaks: After every hour of study give your child a 10 – 30 minutes break. Let them watch their favourite tv shows, or play games. You can even go out for a walk and eat ice-cream. After which, you will be back with a more active child who is ready to conquer success.

3. Expectations: We all as parents want our children to be the topper. Having such expectations result as stress to our children. If we work with them without having such expectations, the child will automatically want to keep on improving.

4. Mindmaps: Mindmaps are really good at improving memory and learning a subject. Ask your children to read a particular topic and draw what they have learned in the form of a Mindmap. This will be a sort of fun activity and in the end, will profit your child.
